But that is not what ships are for.

There is a lot going on in this image... Perhaps I should explain.

The person who invented the ship also invented the shipwreck.

Ships are safe in the harbor but that is not what ships are for.

"When I get done the thing may not float but I am learning how to build a better boat.

Okay... perhaps I should explain more.

For some reason this week has had a serious life lesson ship theme thing going on. This week I listen to a talk on Creativelive.com (again, highly recommend the site) and there was a saying that really struck me, the shipwreck one. Basically it means being creative means taking risk and if you are not willing to take risk well then you cannot be creative. (Very quick paraphrase there but this is shaping up to be a long blog and I have the attention span of a gnat so must keep moving.)

The above event got the thinking about ships not being built to stay safe in harbor. I love that saying, we as humans can find our safe place in life and you can ride out the rest of your life in harbor but that is not what we are for. (again quick opinion on the saying)

I am not overly found of Kenny but I must say I love the lyrics to his new song, "Build a Better Boat" I can REALLY relate to the words of that song. I often play to remind myself of why I do what I do.

So with me making a concerted effort to clearly understand what each photography "is for" I thought I should create a photograph with a ship scene. Whew... that is the quick version of how I got to today.

Soooo... yet another challenge I have for myself is to imagine a photograph and bring it to life. I am happy to say the photograph I imagined is close(ish) to what I manage to capture.

Another challenge that I gave myself (as if there wasn't already enough going on in this photograph) is since I could not find a boat like I imagine, hey I will make one.

Now let me say this is not what I imagined but I use moments in life to learn and I learn carving is a lot harder than you'd think. Especially when you by the cheapest set of tools Hobby Lobby has to offer. But I also learned a little more about a craft today.

Soooo... to add to all this I also heard this week and believe that a step made in failure is still a step forward. And although this is not what I imagine, there was A LOT learned and gained from this photograph. So in that way is it better than I hoped and more than I imagined.

Sorry I know this is very hurried, disjointed and rushed but, as I mentioned, there is a lot going on in this photograph, in my head, in my life so there is no reason my blog should be any different. 🤗
